State Trooper, Kansas Highway Patrol

The Kansas Highway Patrol is a law enforcement agency dedicated to the Service, Courtesy, and Protection, which was first established when the agency was formed in 1937. The Patrol’s Kansas state troopers, Capitol Police officers, motor carrier inspectors, and civilian workers are devoted to improving the quality of life for citizens and travelers in Kansas through spirited and dedicated service, which was laid in place by our predecessors over the past 75+ years.

TYPE:  Full Time

SALARY:  Trooper Trainee
• While in the academy: $18.26/hour (pay grade 25)

 Trooper
• Graduation - 3 years in rank: $20.58/hour (pay grade 27, step 5)
• 4-5 years in rank: $22.16/hour (pay grade 27, step 8)

Master Trooper/Technical Trooper
 Eligible after 5 years as Trooper:
• 0-3 years in rank: $25.68/hour (pay grade 32, step 4)
• 4-5 years in rank: $26.98/hour (pay grade 32, step 6)
• 6-8 years in rank: $28.31/hour (pay grade 32, step 8)
• 9-10 years in rank: $29.73/hour (pay grade 32, step 10)
• 11-13 years in rank: $31.22/hour (pay grade 32, step 12)
• 14-15 years in rank: $32.78/hour (pay grade 32, step 14)
• 16+ years in rank: $34.42/hour (pay grade 32, step 16)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Free of conviction of any crime punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary
• Good physical and mental condition
• Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years of age when recruit training begins
• Must pass vision and hearing standards
• Possess a high school diploma or GED
• Possess a valid U.S. driver's license
• Willing to live and work anywhere within the State of Kansas
