The Part-time Court Security Officer is responsible for maintaining order and decorum in Municipal Court. Provides the presence of security to employees and citizens in the courtroom, court clerk offices and lobby areas of the Municipal Court. Executes detention orders issued as deemed necessary by the judge; coordinates confinement and transport with the Lenexa Police Department and Johnson County Adult Detention Facility. Assists judge, prosecutors, and court clerks in the enforcement of court orders.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:
Maintains order and decorum in the Municipal Court area. Provides direct physical security to all persons present in courtrooms and Municipal Court common areas. Monitors court activity and maintains readiness to intervene utilizing reason, common sense, mediation and authority if appropriate.
Prepares court room for the dockets, opens court by announcing presiding Judge. Checks court room and Municipal Court common areas to ensure facility is in appropriate condition. Immediately notifies Building Maintenance of any vandalism or related property situations.
Detains prisoners as ordered by the judge. Coordinates confinement with the Lenexa Police Department or transport with Johnson County Adult Detention Center and assists Police Officers as necessary.
Checks the criminal history and warrant status of defendants scheduled for court.
Prepares and maintains various reports on various incidents at Municipal Court including recovered property, ill or injured persons, and informs Court Manager about complaints or problems from the public
Assists with maintaining audio visual and surveillance equipment in the courtroom and within the Court facility
Other duties as requested by the Municipal Court Manger, judge, prosecutors, or Police Department
SALARY: Salary and Benefits: Salary range is $17.82 to $20.56 per hour. Must be available to work 24 hours per week.This position is eligible for retirement and leave benefits.

Walk distances required to maintain order in Municipal Court areas
Visual stamina and acuity to observe persons, places and things close up and at a distance
Education, Training, Certification, and Experience
Must be a certified law enforcement officer with minimum of one year of experience or be able to attain certification as a law enforcement officer according to the standards of the State of Kansas and the Lenexa Police Department; minimum of 21 years of age at start of employment; hold a valid driver’s license; successful completion of background examination, physical and drug examinations. Prior law enforcement experience or. Must maintain yearly state certification with 40 hours of certified training.
NCIC certification, experience using REJIS, and the ability to speak, read, and interpret Spanish is preferred. College courses in criminal justice or a related Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
The Lenexa Police Department will automatically disqualify any individual who:
Has been convicted of a felony or any offense that would be constituted as a felony within the State of Kansas or the United States
Has been convicted of or took part in the commission of a Class “A” or “B” misdemeanor within the past five years or been convicted of any crime of a sexual nature
Has been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the United States Armed Forces
Has had his / her state certification as a Law Enforcement Officer denied / revoked or suspended
Falsified or lied about any information requested on a questionnaire or application as part of the hiring process
Exhibited any conduct or a pattern of conduct that would tend to disrupt, diminish, or otherwise jeopardize public trust in the law enforcement profession
Tattoos: Any tattoos which are visible while in uniform are considered automatic disqualifiers. Tattoos which can be covered by the normal wear of jewelry or by Department issued sleeve may be allowed on a case-by-case basis. Tattoos of a non-medical nature on the face, neck head, fingers or hands will not be allowed. Tattoos of an obscene or offensive nature will not be allowed.
Has used marijuana within the past three years
Has used any other illegal drug within the last five years
Has an established pattern of prescription medication abuse
Has an established pattern of alcohol abuse
Has had a Driving Under the Influence conviction or diversion as an adult within the last five years or has shown a pattern of traffic law violations that indicate disrespect for traffic laws and disregard for public safety. Have three or more chargeable or at fault accidents within the past five years. Have had their driver’s license suspended or revoked within the past five years
Does not possess a valid state driver’s license
