Public Service Officer, Lenexa Police Department

We are currently conducting a search for a Public Service Officer in our Police Department. This entry level civilian position serves as the first line of contact between the police department and citizens who come to the front lobby of the station, or who contact the department via telephone or other electronic device, seeking police–related information and/or services.  Also serves as the primary handler and custodian of many department records and is charged with the responsibilities of data entry, data storage, the dissemination of information, and the fulfillment of records requests.  Responsible for taking offense and accident reports and may write traffic citations when appropriate.

Responsibilities include completing and processing necessary paperwork regarding police reports and motor vehicle accident reports. Interviewing individuals that are involved in the police reports and obtaining the necessary information regarding their situation. Keying pertinent information from the reports into the computer database and processing necessary paperwork regarding security guard applications. The PSO does also assist the public by providing free car seat installation inspections and finger printing services. Monitoring police radio transmissions and provide assistance as requested and other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Data entry/clerical-entering information into report data base; receive, review and processes records and discovery requests; processing report expungement orders; sorting and distributing interoffice mail and messages to officers and employees; serving arrest warrants via fax; collecting bonds; maintaining tow records.

  • Report writing-completes walk-in, phone in, and email generated police offense reports and motor vehicle accident reports by interviewing the individual making the report and gathering necessary information.  Issues traffic citations as necessary.

  • Other-assisting in booking process as necessary (prisoner searches, fingerprinting, photographing); monitors police radio transmissions and provides assistance as requested; installs and inspects child safety seats.

  • Fingerprinting/photographing Services-all City applicants, certain arrestees and subjects for Municipal Court

TYPE:  Full Time

SALARY:  Starting salary is $34,703/ yearly, with an excellent benefits and retirement package.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education, Training, Qualifications or Special Requirements

    High school diploma or equivalent.
    Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
    Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with the general public in a variety of situations.

    Ability to elicit pertinent and accurate information from individuals in both stressful and non-stressful situations.

    Ability to maintain required records and prepare required reports.

    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
    Ability to perform data entry and retrieval functions using various computer programs.
    Knowledge of the street layout and geography of the City of Lenexa and Johnson County.
    Skill in operation of desktop computer and a variety of information data bases.
    Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
    Ability to utilize proper grammar, punctuation, spelling and structure in written communications.
    Ability to record numbers accurately.
    Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding record keeping and maintenance.
    Ability to learn current operational software packages required for job.
    Prior criminal history will be considered.
    Willingness and ability to work a wide variety of duty shifts involving varying days off and hours, weekends and holidays.
    Willingness and ability to work (and be compensated for) occasional overtime assignments as determined by management in order to meet minimum staffing levels.

The Lenexa Police Department will automatically disqualify any individual who:

    Has been convicted of a felony or any offense that would be constituted as a felony within the State of Kansas or the United States

    Has been convicted of or took part in the commission of a Class “A” or “B” misdemeanor within the past five years or been convicted of any crime of a sexual nature

    Has been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the United States Armed Forces

    Has had his / her state certification as a Law Enforcement Officer denied / revoked or suspended

    Falsified or lied about any information requested on a questionnaire or application as part of the hiring process

    Exhibited any conduct or a pattern of conduct that would tend to disrupt, diminish, or otherwise jeopardize public trust in the law enforcement profession
    ​Tattoos: Any tattoos which are visible while in uniform are considered automatic disqualifiers. Tattoos which can be covered by the normal wear of jewelry or by Department issued​ sleeve may be allowed on a case-by-case basis. Tattoos of a non-medical nature on the face, neck head, fingers or hands will not be allowed. Tattoos of an obscene or offensive nature will not be allowed. ​

Drug/Alcohol Usage

    Has used marijuana within the past three years

    Has used any other illegal drug within the last five years

    Has an established pattern of prescription medication abuse

    Has an established pattern of alcohol abuse

Driving Record

    Has had a Driving Under the Influence conviction or diversion as an adult within the last five years or has shown a pattern of traffic law violations that indicate disrespect for traffic laws and disregard for public safety. Have three or more chargeable or at fault accidents within the past five years. Have had their driver’s license suspended or revoked within the past five years

    Does not possess a valid state driver’s license​​.
