Police Officer - Lateral Transfer, Wichita Police Department

The Wichita Police Department is looking for experienced and qualified Kansas law enforcement officers to apply for a pilot program focusing on applicants who would like to laterally transfer to the Wichita Police Department.  Applications will be accepted from December 29, 2016 to May 12, 2017.

TYPE:  Full Time

SALARY:  Lateral transfer Police Officer beginning pay will be determined by the following Police Officer pay scale and pertains only to years of prior law enforcement service.  The below scale applies to the number of years of prior law enforcement experience completed after the Lateral Transfer Police Officer’s prior employment police academy graduation and completion of the Lateral Transfer Police Officer’s prior employment field training.

2 – 4 years:    Begin at step A
5 – 7 years:    Begin at step C
8 – 10 years:   Begin at step E
10 + years:     Begin at step F

Lateral transfer recruits will be classified as Police Recruit, and paid Recruit pay during their time in the Police Academy.  Police Recruits are probationary employees.  Police Recruits are eligible to participate in one of the health insurance programs offered by the City and receive paid holidays.  Upon satisfactory completion of recruit training, the Police Recruit will be advanced to the position of Police Officer and will be eligible for all benefits afforded full-time employees.


The following criteria is the minimum that must be met for this application process.

  • Applicants must have at least 2 years of law enforcement experience, post academy graduation and field training.
  • Applicants must currently be a full time “Police Officer” or “Law Enforcement Officer” who holds an “active law enforcement certificate” issued by the Kansas Commission on Peace Officer’s Standards and Training as defined by Kansas State Statute 74-5602 and subsections.
  • Lateral Transfer applicants will be required to successfully complete the WPD Applicant Process:
    • Initial on-line application and Aptitude Test
    • First contact interview at the Training Academy
    • Physical Fitness Test
    • Thorough background checks to include visit to current agency to review  IA and personnel file
    • Polygraph examination
    • Command Staff Interview
    • Conditional Job Offer
    • Fingerprints
    • Psychological Testing
    • Cooper’s Run
