The City of Westwood Kansas is currently accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. The City of Westwood is in NE Johnson County and we provide police services to the cities of Westwood Hills, and Mission Woods as well.  We border Kansas City, Missouri to our eastside and Kansas City, Kansas to our north. The collective population is approximately 2,240.  We have two state highways that run through our cities, a large medical facility and a Walmart Neighborhood Market. We have excellent schools, a strong sense of community and access to great entertainment and recreational opportunities close by.  

We are taking applications from Certified Officers Only with three (3) years or more of certified road patrol experience. Applicants should possess a certification by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center or able to obtain a certification by reciprocity within the first year.  

Westwood is a small professional police department with 8 full time sworn officers and 3 part-time officers.  In our culture we have an expectation that our officers will stay active during their shift and produce high quality police work.  The way we interact with the community and those traveling through it is paramount to the success of our mission.  Whenever possible officers are expected to be respectful and pleasant to those they interact with during their workday; it’s the right thing to do and ultimately makes officers safer. 

Requirements, Pay, Education, & Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent is required.  Ability to adapt to and treat different people, behaviors and circumstances well.  No felony convictions,  no felony drug usage, and a clean driving record are required.  You will be required to fill the requirements of the job description.     

Police Officer 

  • $43,670 to $66,080 dependent on experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of certified patrol experience

  • Possess a certification by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center or able to obtain a certification by reciprocity within the first year is required

  • Ability to obtain a minimum of 40 hours of continuing education annually is required

This position is recognized as non-exempt by the FLSA standards.  We offer an excellent benefit package to include KP&F retirement, Medical, Dental, Vision, access to the Kansas 457 plan, Sick Leave, Personal Days, Vacation Days. All uniforms, cleaning and duty gear are provided. 

Applicant process will consist of a filling out an application, a background packet, an oral board, a polygraph or similar process, and a Chief’s interview.  Post offer there would be a psychological, drug screen and physical.
