Parsons is the 36th largest city in Kansas and the largest city in a forty-mile radius in the rural SE corner of the state. The department has an authorized strength of 26 fulltime officers and 8 support staff and is seeking individuals who are ready and able to meet new and exciting challenges and will enthusiastically embrace the department’s focus on diversity, communication skills, empathy and problem solving. This historic community is celebrating its Sesquicentennial 150th birthday.

Parsons is home to Labette Community College and is close to Pittsburg and the University of Pittsburg, as well as entertainment and gaming at Kansas Crossing Casino (30 miles), award winning schools, museums, over 300 acres of city parks and a growing trail system. Labette Health is a nationally ranked 100-bed hospital with a Level 3 Trauma Center and Life Flight based helicopter services. Wichita, KS the biggest city in Kansas and Kansas City are both a 2-hour drive. Local air service is in Joplin, MO.

The City has purchased land for a new public safety center and is in the design phase. The center will include a regional in-service training site for the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) and will house the Labette Community College criminal justice and fire science programs.

Pay ranges from $40,267.50 to $49,773.75 with overtime opportunities.

Additional incentives up to $5,400 annually. Incentives paid for FTO, Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Taser/OC Instructor, Crime Prevention Specialist, and more.

Police academy training fully paid for Recruit Officers. Out of State Lateral candidates are subject to the Kansas Reciprocity testing process.

All uniforms and equipment supplied at time of hire.

Free tuition paid at Labette Community College to obtain an Associate degree.

Paid holidays and paid vacation time.

Group health/dental insurance coverage with low employee contributions for family coverage.

KP&F retirement.

No residency requirement – 45-minute response time.

This is a full-time position. The full-time officers currently work 12-hour shifts (with built in overtime). MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK ROTATING SHIFTS, INCLUDING WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: Twenty-one years of age at time of appointment; high school diploma or GED; good physical condition; no domestic violence or felony convictions. No Brady/Giglio issues. A list of disqualifiers is available on the police website.

Selection process will include a written test, interview panel, medical and psychological examination, drug screen, background check and polygraph.  Applications on an on-going basis, testing is scheduled to meet applicant availability.
