As a Norton Police Officer, you must be a person of honor and integrity on and off the job, possess strong communication skills, and be able to render sound decisions under pressure. Most of all, you must be pro-active and committed to public service, which includes participating in community service events/activities, assisting our citizens, and investigating/solving crimes.
We maintain a high degree of efficiency by offering our officers new, up-to-date equipment that is a must for getting the job done! Each officer with the Norton Police Department has their own take-home patrol car. Each patrol vehicle is outfitted with its own MDT unit (Mobile Data Terminal) specific to the officer. These in-car laptops make it easy for an officer to complete reports in the field, access the RMS reporting system, check for wants and warrants on subjects you may encounter, access the department’s server to review other reports, special patrols, check statutes, policies, etc. The MDT’s also allow for driver’s licenses and vehicle license plate inquiries through NCIC when necessary and prudent. Besides MDT’s, our well-maintained patrol vehicles are also fully equipped with AR-15 patrol rifles, newly added less lethal weaponry, stop sticks, etc. We have also recently implemented an automated evidence custody system.
Norton is located in Norton County, Kansas. Our community borders Nebraska and we are the fourth county east of Colorado. The Prairie Dog State Park (Sebelius Reservoir) is located 4 miles west of Norton, offering great camping, boating and is one of the top fishing lakes in the state of Kansas! The area offers great hunting too! South of Norton, is one of the most highly maintained 9 hole golf courses in the area. Norton also offers an exceptional school system. U.S. Highways 36 and 283 intersect in the middle of Norton, offering plenty of opportunity for drug interdiction.
The Norton Police Department is currently comprised of 7 officers; Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, Sergeant/FTO and 4 patrol officers. Each officer is provided a tailored outer carrier molle police ballistic vest purchased by the department and is issued a Class A uniform to be worn for court and special services.
Shifts: Our officers enjoy 12 hour shifts that allow for, every other Friday, Saturday, Sunday OFF regardless of seniority level. All shifts primarily consist of two patrol officers.
Salary: The range for this position is $18.81 to $27.63/hour, depending on education and previous law enforcement experience and/or certifications. There is additional compensation through opportunities for overtime and shift differential as well. Currently evaluating salary scale with the objective to increase pay.

We also offer an optional 457 deferred compensation plan and supplemental insurance plans.
Moving Expenses: Currently offering up to $1,000 move reimbursement for applicants.
Minimum Requirements: This position requires a willingness to work ALL rotating shifts, including days, afternoons and evenings, plus weekends and holidays. Applicants must be 21 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED (college preferred) and no felony convictions. Applicants must be able to pass an oral board review, psychological examination, extensive background check, drug screen and physical. The applicant is encouraged to live within the city limits of Norton, however, a living requirement of up to 5 miles out of the city limits is allowed. Requires the possession of a valid Kansas driver’s license in good standing, by the date of hire. NO Brady/Giglio issues.
