The Labette County Sheriff's Office is seeking a full-time Deputy Sheriff to work in our Jail Division as a Transport Deputy.  A Transport Deputy is required to work 8-hour shifts, Monday through Friday. Must be able to work weekends, holidays, days, nights, and overnight as needed for call in and/or operational purposes. 

A Transport Deputy’s primary responsibility includes the care, custody and control of inmates who are moved in and out of the Labette County Jail.  This includes transport to and from the Court Centers, medical appointments, prison transports, and other transportation needs as they arise.  This position is responsible for the extradition of fugitives from inside and outside the State of Kansas. 

In addition, a Deputy Sheriff’s general responsibility includes but not limited to patrolling the county, as well as residential areas to provide a visible deterrent in uniform and in marked cars and to enforce state, and municipal laws, enforce traffic laws and protect life and property; monitors areas for signs of any criminal activity; patrols for suspicious persons or vehicles. Perform initial and follow up investigations regarding criminal activity; Serve civil papers and warrants; and testify in city and District Court. 

Salary/Benefits: Wages start at $21.87 an hour (DOQ) and increase to $22.70 an hour after the first year. Weekend and evening shifts also receive an additional $0.75 shift differential. Benefits include health care, life insurance, KPERS retirement, vacation, and sick time. Additional benefits include tuition fee waivers for educational courses taken through Labette Community College, while employed with the county.

Uniforms/Training: Uniforms and equipment are provided by the Sheriff's Office, and boots are authorized for reimbursement (up to $200) after 6 months of employment. Deputies are provided take-home vehicles, a cell phone and unlimited wireless internet.  The Sheriff's Office provides in-house training, and will pay for additional training opportunities, as needed.  

General requirements: 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen; 
  • Must be at least 21 years of age; 
  • Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record to satisfy insurance; 
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent;
  • General Computer knowledge; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, data entry, proofreading, editing, and attention to detail. 
  • Must have an acceptable background, meet KSCPOST qualifications

Preferred Experience:

  • Possess Kansas Law Enforcement Certification, or any state certification with reciprocity.
  • Prior experience in adult or juvenile corrections, law enforcement, military, or related field.
  • College, or higher education in related field.
