Chief of Police, Hutchinson Police Department

04/29/2023 6:52 AM | Grover Piper (Administrator)

Nestled along the Arkansas River, only 45 miles northwest of Wichita, Kansas, the City of Hutchinson boasts numerous amenities, robust businesses, a strong agricultural economy, and a vibrant downtown. Hutchinson, with a population of 40,000, is the county seat of Reno County; and is known to the locals as “Hutch.” Residents of Hutchinson enjoy all the delights of a larger metropolis within the folds of a smaller, tight-knit community.

Focused on serving and protecting the Hutchinson community, the City’s Police Department comprises approximately 80 employees across multiple divisions, working with an adopted budget of more than $12.56 million this fiscal year. Under the direction of the City Manager, Hutchinson’s Chief of Police is responsible for managing and overseeing all community policing, law enforcement, and crime prevention activities, including field operations, criminal investigations, training and staff development, special programs, and technical support services, as well as the activities of Animal Services. Additional responsibilities include policy and program development, fiscal management, and providing highly responsible and complex support to the City Manager and City Council.

The City of Hutchinson is searching for a new Police Chief who is a confident and collaborative servant-leader who understands how to grow and support law enforcement professionals serving a diverse community. Candidates should be knowledgeable in modern principles and practices of professional law enforcement and leadership, including crime prevention, community-oriented policing, scientific criminal investigation, patrol management and development, traffic regulation and enforcement, records management, report preparation, and custody of persons and property.

Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field, with a master’s degree preferred, and at least seven years of experience in a command position with a law enforcement agency similar in size or larger than the Hutchinson Police Department. Command experience in an agency of a smaller size or scope will be considered with additional years of experience. Graduation from the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, Police Executive Research Forum, Senior Management Institute for Police, or similar is desirable. The selected candidate must also possess, or be able to obtain, appropriate certification as a peace officer in the State of Kansas and a Kansas driver’s license. As state law requires, Hutchinson participates in veterans’ preference hiring practices. Please also note that while residency is not required for this position, it will be strongly encouraged.

The City is offering a salary range of $104,525 to $153,674 for this position, dependent on qualifications and experience.
