Under the supervision of the County Sheriff, the Deputy Sheriff is a non-exempt position under the FLSA which performs general law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property within Republic County. Work involves patrolling county areas, enforcing the law, securing compliance with traffic violations, and making preliminary investigations at the scene of a crime or traffic accident. Work in this position involves an element of personal danger. The employee in this position must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in handling emergencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Enforce laws and ordinances to maintain public safety and order
  • Patrol assigned areas to prevent and detect criminal activity
  • Respond to emergency calls, accidents, and incidents
  • Conduct investigations and gather evidence
  • Arrest and process individuals suspected of committing crimes
  • Serve warrants and subpoenas
  • Testify in court proceedings as needed
  • Provide assistance and support to other law enforcement agencies

Skills:

  • Loss prevention: Ability to identify and prevent theft or loss of property
  • Surveillance: Proficient in monitoring and observing activities for security purposes
  • Certificate: Possess a valid law enforcement certification or be able to obtain one
  • Law enforcement: Knowledge of laws, regulations, and procedures related to law enforcement activities
  • Conflict management: Ability to handle difficult situations and resolve conflicts peacefully
  • Drive: Valid Kansas driver's license 
  • Animal care: Ability to handle and care for animals in various situations
  • Report writing: Strong written communication skills for documenting incidents, investigations, and reports

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $17.20 - $22.70 per hour

Expected hours: 42.5 per week
