Police Dispatcher, Prairie Village Police Department

Nature of Work:

Responsible for assisting police officers in effectively protecting lives and property of Prairie Village and Mission Hills residents. As such, provides a communication link between public, other agencies and police. Work involves performing duties with high degree of independence and proper judgment.

Responsibilities and Primary Duties/Functions:

  • Receive all incoming police and 911 telephone calls; dispatch emergency services to location; provide radio services as required
  • Record data in CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch) system
  • Complete various computer checks requested by officers and relay response information to requesting officer
  • Maintain appropriate records and logs
  • Enter, modify and remove warrants and wants in law enforcement computer system
  • Monitor station alarms
  • Utilize and maintain recording equipment
  • Receive funds and process appropriate paperwork
  • Assist citizens regarding a wide range of information services, complaint resolution, fees, questions about Police Department regulations, City and State laws, and related matters
  • Notary Public duties
  • Perform other related duties as required
  • Monitor building security for Public Safety Center and Municipal Building

  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment as follows: portable and mobile radios, telephone and personal computer, including various application software, with sufficient keyboard skills to be proficient in entering data quickly

  • Work required shift work and/or overtime as assigned
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, with judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions
  • Knowledge of community geography and demographics
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and confront hostile persons
  • Prompt and regular attendance on the job, with all required equipment, is expected of each employee, and each is expected to timely complete all job assignments
  • Ability to prioritize emergency calls and requests for service

  • Ability to understand and apply Department rules and regulations, City of Prairie Village rules and regulations, and standard operating procedures

  • Ability to use sound judgment when operating in official capacity in order to make quick and responsible decisions

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. Some computer experience. One year of emergency radio dispatch preferred. No felony convictions. Felony arrests and misdemeanor convictions will be subject to review if involving drug/alcohol violations, assault/battery violations, or any crime involving moral turpitude violations. Successful completion of the Communications Training Officer Program, demonstrating a degree of proficiency compatible with standards set for position.

Salary/Pay Rate:$39,600 – 59,400 annually
