Police Officer, Herington Police Department

Under the supervision of the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police and/or Sergeant, the Police Officer is a non-exempt position under FLSA which performs a variety of tasks to support the mission and goals of the Department.  Specific duties will vary according to the assigned shift as designated by the Chief of Police, including rotation to other shifts as the Chief of Police deems appropriate or necessary.  Work is performed within the general framework of established departmental rules and regulations.  Tasks are expected to be performed in an effective, efficient and safe manner.  Successful performers are those who are capable and willing to make decisions that are consistently in line with the Department’s mission, goals and objectives.  Personal conduct (on-duty as well as off-duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public’s trust or confidence in the agency or its members.  The employee in this position enforces all federal, state and local laws and ordinances.  Making arrests, issuing traffic citations and investigating crimes and accidents are the primary responsibilities of this position.  Performing patrol duties and providing citizen assistance are expected.  This employee should possess excellent communication and public relation skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Patrols the City of Herington, lakes owned by the City of Herington and Herington Municipal Airport to preserve law and order;
  • Answers a variety of calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, robberies, domestic disturbances, other misdemeanors and felonies, and citizen assistance calls;
  • Conducts investigations, investigates crime scenes and collects evidence;
  • Issues Citations and Warnings for traffic violations;
  • Interviews suspects, victims and witnesses and makes arrests;
  • Assists and works with outside agencies on the apprehension of criminals and investigations;
  • Executes arrest and search warrants;
  • Performs security checks of business and residential properties;
  • Completes reports and records and testifies in court;
  • Provides security for Herington Municipal Court;
  • Serves as first responder to emergency situations and assist Fire and medical personnel.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists other departments as the need arises;
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience:  Prior experience is not required.  One to three years of similar or related experience is preferred.  The employee in this position is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of employment.

Education:  A High School Diploma or GED is required.  An Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or Psychology is preferred.  This position requires graduation from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, 40 hours of continuing education annually, radar certification and a valid driver’s license.

Technical Skills:  A thorough knowledge of all federal, state and local laws and ordinances, computers, law enforcement techniques and law enforcement supervision is required.  This employee must be able to efficiently operate computers, firearms, patrol vehicles, two-way radios, radar equipment, breath analysis equipment and other law enforcement equipment.  The ability to interpret data, to complete and check reports and documents, to develop department policies and procedures, to understand and anticipate problems and to read and interpret manuals, legal documents, reports and written instructions is required.  This employee should possess excellent public relation and oral and written communication skills.

Problem Solving:  Problem solving is a factor in this position.  This employee encounters problems with traffic violations, criminal investigations and citizen complaints.

Decision Making:  Decision making is a factor in this position.  This employee makes decisions about making arrests, investigating crimes and accidents and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner. 

Supervision:  This employee works with occasional supervision from the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police and/or Sergeant and has no supervisory duties.

Financial Accountability:  This employee is responsible for the safe operation of department equipment, but does not participate in the annual budget process.

Personal Relations:  Daily contact with the general public, co-workers and supervisory personnel is expected.

Working Conditions:  Some adverse working conditions exist within this position.  Exposure to hazardous chemicals, explosives, heights, excessive noise and all types of weather conditions is expected.  This position contains an element of risk to personal safety.  This employee is exposed to bloodborne pathogens while investigating crime scenes and seizing and preserving evidence. 

Physical Requirements:  The ability to pass and maintain all physical activities and requirements of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and Kansas Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training is required. 

SALARY:  $17.00 per hour with additional pay based on years of certified experience.
