Police Investigative Specialist, Lenexa Police Department

The City of Lenexa is currently looking for a Full-time Police Investigative Specialist.  This civilian position supports the police investigation function by assisting in or conducting investigative activities that do not require a commissioned officer or detective. Position Summary

As directed, employees in this position will collect evidence; process crime scenes; investigate minor crimes; support criminal and special investigations, crime prevention and the apprehension and prosecution of suspects.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts and documents investigations or investigative support activities; manages evidence submissions; processes crime scenes, stolen autos and recovered stolen property; recovers photographic, video and audio evidence and reviews for investigative leads; processes or assists in processing electronic items such as phones, tablets and computers and reviews content for evidentiary value; assists in or conducts background investigations for employment; assists with witness, victim and suspect interviews; and investigates minor crimes as assigned by supervisor.   

  • Attends meetings, training, and testifies in courts of law, civil proceedings, administrative hearings, and works regularly with Department staff, other criminal justice professionals, interacts with civilian and professional groups, and shares knowledge and experiences with others as directed.   

  • Required to drive a vehicle, to include city-owned vehicles, to off-site training courses, meetings, and/or other facilities.

  • Required to work evenings, nights, weekends and call backs as needed.

Additional Examples of Work Performed

  • Assists Patrol Division on complex or extensive crime scenes. 

  • Briefs officers and staff on any pertinent events or trends.

  • Other collateral duties as assigned.


Minimum:  High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license. Five years of prior law enforcement experience.   

Preferred:  Associates degree in related field. Law enforcement investigative experience.

Compensation and Benefits
