As KPOA is heading into the busy season, I thought it would be appropriate to update you on some of the things we have been working on to support Kansas Law Enforcement. We have engaged in talks and correspondence with Ed Klump, our associations lobbyist, and there are number of bills that need our support or opposition. We’ve already weighed in on things from mandatory towing of vehicles for registration violations to mandatory training for dispatchers in T-CPR. We rely heavily on Ed’s guidance as well as the input we receive from our members to take the proper stand for Kansas Law Enforcement. We have also worked closely with the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police, the Kansas Sheriff Association, state agencies and others in an effort to provide services and support for families of fallen officers. Watch for some information forthcoming on standardization of funeral services, to the extent of the family’s wishes, and a mechanism to provide support to survivors. Members of the executive committee of the KPOA have met and trained a number of governors in our expectations and the benefits of the KPOA, so feel free to reach out to them with any questions or concerns. They are a great group dedicated to improving Kansas LE. Additionally, we are actively vetting training to be brought to the Fall conference, and we’re excited about the potential line-up. Next week we will provide more information on that, upcoming legislative matters, and the work being done to obtain a COLA and retirement plan modifications at the Legislative Conference and Meetings in Topeka on January 28th. Please make arrangements to attend, and I hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Lt. Tim Greenwood
Hays Police Department
KPOA President
