COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission was established by the Florida Legislature to analyze the shooting at MSDHS in Parkland, FL, and other mass-casualty incidents as well as offer recommendations on improvements in law enforcement, mental health, and school safety. Sergeant John Suess IV of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will summarize the investigative findings and MSDPSC recommendations for improving various systemic failures. Retired Aurora Police Department Homicide De- tective Craig J. Appel will present the Century 16 Mass Murders Investigation. The presentation will cover the efforts taken to bring one of the most prolific mass murderers to justice. Topics being covered include a timeline of the defendant's life, arrest, laborious investigation, court proceedings, prosecution, post-conviction, and the legal gamesmanship, numerous obstacles overcome, lessons learned, and tragedies averted. • Participants will acquire the skills to develop a plan based on the answers to difficult questions in regards to how their own agency is prepared to deal with such events.
