This training will provide information regarding the dynamics of sexual assault, how trauma can affect individuals, how to interact with a survivor of sexual assault and how to conduct a trauma informed interview.
Learning Objectives:
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- Understand the dynamics of sexual assault
- Improved ability to conduct a trauma informed interview of a victim
- Understand how victim trauma can impact the response and investigation of sexual assault
- Identify and classify sex crimes
- Demonstrate an understanding of special considerations in sex crimes, such as child abuse and strangulation
- Improved ability to interact with the victim

About the Presenter:
Shannon Leeper is a veteran law enforcement officer with 25 years of experience. She graduated from the Johnson County Regional Police Academy (1st in her class) and began a career with the Lenexa Kansas Police Department in 1998. In 2005, she joined the Investigations Division as a general assignment detective. She helped establish a Special Victims Unit in 2008, where she remained for 17 years. During her time with the Lenexa Police Department, Shannon took great pride in developing and presenting training for law enforcement officers, prosecutors, medical providers, advocates, and other stake holders. Following retirement, she gained experience as a Title IX investigator for a large, public university before returning to criminal investigations. Shannon currently works for the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office. She is the longest standing member of the Johnson County Sexual Assault Response Team, and the current Chair. She represents District 1 as a Governor for the Kansas Peace Officers Association (KPOA), and she is an investigator for the Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigations Team (OICIIT). She continues to provide training and case consultation.
