This course is designed to provide law enforcement officers with the skills and knowledge necessary to legally, safely, and effectively collect cyber (online) information for use in law enforcement investigations. The course will cover various topics, including numerous practical exercises to test officers’ knowledge and skills in legally collecting online information for use in investigations, prosecutions, and courtroom testimony. Officers will also explore dark web resources, cryptocurrency resources, relevant case studies, and software for use in investigations. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively conduct law enforcement investigations online without giving away their identities or creating vulnerabilities for suspects to use against their testimony in court.
Instructor:
John McCary is a decorated combat veteran, a former commissioned Foreign Service Officer in the State Department, and a startup founder. John designed and now teaches the Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) course at the University of Arizona College of Applied Science and Technology, an NSA-approved National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations
(CAE-CO). John designed and led the development of the classified TIGR software and hardware suite at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Since then, John has added to his skillset by becoming a Certified Ethical Hacker and developing intelligence and analysis software for national security entities. John has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, CNBC, the Washington Post, and other major national outlets. He was profiled in the Oscar-nominated documentary Operation Homecoming.
