IPMBA Police Cyclist Course

Hosted by the Olathe Police Department

April 29 - May 2, 2025
Olathe Police Department

Olathe PD is again hosting IPMBA from Tuesday 4/29 – Friday 5/2.  We are teaching the course FREE of charge, however, IPMBA requires a $100 certification fee for membership benefits.  Attached is the readiness form, required equipment checklist, and tentative course schedule.

Be prepared for the street! This essential training combines Emergency Vehicle Operations for bike officers with patrol procedures, tactics, night operations, mock scenes, and basic bike maintenance and on-the-road repairs. Learn to ride like a pro, avoid crashes, and use your bike to foil the bad guys every time. Off-road riding and bike-specific live-fire exercises may be added at the instructor’s discretion.

Curriculum Overview: Police Cyclist Course Curriculum Overview

Prerequisites: Law enforcement officer; basic bicycle-handling skills; good physical condition

Required Equipment: Police Cyclist Course Equipment List  A few common things students forget are: pedal retention, helmet, bike that fits, lights that work , proper shoes, spare tire tubes.  Students must come to the course physically prepared to spend much of the day on their bikes.

Officers attending the course will be training most everyday in the public’s view.  An approved bicycle duty uniform with issued handgun and ballistic vest is encouraged.  Officers should also plan for inclement weather, training will occur rain or shine.

Olathe PD will provide on-site storage of bikes and gear.

The course schedule is planned for 0830 to 1830 the first two days, 1300 to 2300 the third day, and 1000 to 1800 the final day.

For those agencies with E-Bikes, IPMBA requires the student to complete the basic course on an acoustic bike before testing out on the E-Bike.  If you plan on bringing an E-Bike, you will NOT be able to ride it until the final day after completion of the class.

Testing Procedure: Written and practical

Certification: IPMBA Police Cyclist Certification is available to licensed law enforcement officers who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for certification accompanied by the appropriate fee.
