Police Officer, Lyons Police Department

Under the supervision of the Chief of Police, the Police Officer performs duties in the protection of life, property and the preservation of order in the City of Lyons. The employee in this position enforces all federal, state and local laws in accordance with departmental rules, policies, and regulations. Patrol duties include enforcing traffic laws, investigation of crimes and accidents, and providing public assistance. This employee will be required to exercise initiative and discretion when faced with emergency conditions. This work involves an element of personal danger. This is a non-exempt position. Officers with the Lyons Police Department currently work a 12-hour rotating shift with every other weekend off to include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Must be highly motivated and able to work with little or no supervision.  The Lyons Police Department is consisted of 7-fulltime commissioned Officers and 1-parttime Officer.

About the City of Lyons:

The City of Lyons has a population of around 3,700 people.  Lyons is also located in Rice County, Kansas with Lyons being the County Seat.  We are 30 minutes from McPherson, Hutchinson, and Great Bend, Kansas.  Lyons is also located an hour from Wichita and Salina.  Lyons Consist of 2 Elementary Schools, Middle School, and High School as well as the Rice County Learning Center for optional learning.  Lyons also has many privately owned businesses to include restaurants and shopping.  If you like small town living and working for a smaller department with great staff, the Lyons Police Department is the place for you.

Salary Range: 

Non-Certified Officers starting rangers from $17.30-$19.23 Depending on qualifications.  Certified Officers starting ranges from $19.23 - $24.03 an hour Depending on qualifications.  Great Benefits including yearly vacation, 8 hours sick leave per month, KPERS retirement, 457 retirement, life insurance, AFLAC, and Health, Dental, and Vision insurance paid 80 percent by the City of Lyons.

Essential Functions: 

  • Be knowledgeable of all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. 

  • Investigates suspicious conditions, Citizen complaints, traffic accidents, and traffic enforcement. 

  • Knowledgeable of the court system and presentation of evidence in court proceedings. 

  • Type and submit incident reports to the county attorney as well as to local law enforcement agencies. 

  • Assist with developing and implementing various safety strategies and plans. 

  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with others. 

  • Attends schools and seminars to maintain proficiency and certifications. 

  • Responds to emergencies and critical incidents such as fire alarms, medical emergencies, altercations,
    threats of violence etc. for the purpose of confining, resolving, or preventing injury or otherwise
    hazardous situations. 

  • Must be willing to work a highly flexible schedule based on case load and needs of the department.

  • Must be able to work shift work including days and nights

Education:

High school diploma or GED required. Commissioned as a law enforcement officer. Requires graduation from law enforcement training center (K.L.E.T.C. Certification) and 40 hours of continuing education training annually. 

Additional Requirements:

  • United States Citizen

  • 21-years of age at time of appointment

  • No Felony, domestic violence or serious misdemeanor offenses

  • Possess a valid Kansas driver's license

  • Newly Hired Officers must complete a background check as well as a fingerprint background check before start of employment.

  • Newy non-certified Officers must complete psychological testing before start of employment

Benefits Included:

  • Officers work 12-hour shifts with every other 3-day weekend off for a total of 7 working days/84 hours in a 14-day period. 

  • Medical, Dental, vision and Life for employees and families partially paid by employer 

  • 8 hours Sick leave accrued a month, 14 Paid holidays, and KPERS retirement. 

  • Paid Vacation- 40 hours after the first-year anniversary, 80 hours after your second anniversary, and 80 hours of vacation in January after your second anniversary, 120 hours after 10 years of continuous employment. 

  • Uniforms and Duty Gear Provided to include Gen 5 Glock 17 hand gun and a rock-river AR-15 .223 rifle

  • Take home Patrol Unit if residing in the City of Lyons.
