Detective, Colby Police Department

The City of Colby Police Department is seeking applications to fill the position of Detective. It is a sworn law enforcement role with an investigations focus in a Department of 13 sworn officers in a growing community in western Kansas. 

Applicants must be a US Citizen, twenty-one (21) years of age, and meet the Department standards in the following categories: background investigation, written testing, interviews, psychological test, drug screening and POET physical. Other requirements include a valid Kansas Driver’s license, high school diploma or equivalent and residency requirements. 

Additional requirements would include Kansas Law Enforcement Certification or ability to obtain reciprocal certification. Three years law enforcement experience minimum but more is preferred. Experience in investigations or shown proficiency with felony level cases.

Responsibilities would include investigating assigned criminal cases, assisting the patrol division in investigations and casework and call outs for high profile incidents or investigations where additional experience would be useful. Additionally the detective requires coordinating and building relationships with other law enforcement, social service, educational and private entities to assist in resolving cases. The position includes some call response/patrol and could occasionally include shift coverage in as needed situations. 

The position is traditionally a Monday through Friday Positon, with some exceptions for special events or circumstances, with weekends and holidays off. It has some flexibility in the schedule and is an hourly position with opportunities for overtime or comp time. 

The position’s pay will depend on qualifications and experience.
