The City of Pittsburg is taking applications to fill open positions for patrol officers within the Pittsburg Police Department. Applicants must be a person of honor and integrity, possess strong communication skills, and be able to render sound decisions under pressure.  Most of all, you must be committed to public service, which includes participating in community service activities, assisting citizens, and investigating/solving crimes.

We are accepting qualified applicants with or without prior law enforcement experience. The department focuses on officer growth with training opportunities that help navigate you down one of our many career progression paths that best suits your interests and skillset. Patrol officers work four, 10-hour shifts with a set 3-days off based on seniority. Overlapping shifts allow for a 2-hour period at the end of a shift to complete reports, training, or utilize workout areas for physical fitness and health while on duty.

The Pittsburg Police Department is a 51-officer department serving a community of 21,000. Pittsburg is home to Pittsburg State University, a thriving downtown and growing retail district. Pittsburg is located in southeast Kansas, a 90-minute drive south of the Kansas City Metro area.

Salary: $20.74-$34.86/hr ($43,139-$72,508/year)

  • $2,500 bonus for lateral transfers with Kansas CPOST certification, or other state equivalent.

  • $26.66-$34.86/hr

Pay within each rank will be adjusted based on individual’s experience, training certifications, and other factors.

Career paths and areas of concentration include but are not limited to: Tactical, Technology, Wellness, Community Relations, Traffic, Instructor, Data Analysis, Narcotics, Officer Development, Crisis Intervention and Investigations. Specialized groups include Special Response Team, K9, DARE, Field Training Officer, Bicycle Patrol, Honor Guard, Drone Pilot, Child Forensic Interview, Peer Support, and various inter-department trainer positions.

Requirements:

This position requires a willingness to work ALL rotating shifts, including days, afternoons, evenings, midnights, plus some weekends and holidays.

Applicants must be 21 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED (college preferred) and no felony convictions.

The selection process includes a written test, oral interview, polygraph, and psychological examination. Must be able to pass a law enforcement background check, drug screen and physical.
