The City of Hillsboro, Kansas is a stable and growing community of approximately 2,750 residents, located along U.S. Highway 56 in central Kansas. Hillsboro is home to Tabor College, which brings about 570 additional residents to our community during the academic year. Encompassing 1.75 square miles, Hillsboro is conveniently located 30 minutes from Newton and McPherson, and 50 minutes from Wichita and Salina. Department Description
The Hillsboro Police Department serves our community with dedication and professionalism. The department includes a Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, Patrol Sergeant, two Full-Time Patrol Officers, and seven Part-Time Certified Officers. Each full-time officer is provided with 100% of required equipment and issued a
take-home patrol vehicle—currently 2025 Ford Explorer Interceptors. Officers must reside within 30 minutes of Hillsboro, though residency within the city is preferred. This department values collaboration, community involvement, and ongoing training to ensure officers are well-prepared to serve the community.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Patrol Sergeant, the Police Officer is responsible for protecting life and property by enforcing all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Primary duties include preventative patrol, traffic enforcement, criminal and accident investigations, and providing assistance to citizens. The department operates on a 12-hour rotating shift schedule, allowing officers to work 7 out of 14 days per pay period, and have every other weekend off. Overtime is paid beyond 86 hours per pay period.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet State of Kansas requirements for sworn law enforcement officers:
- U.S. Citizen, age 21 or older
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Kansas Driver’s License
- Clean criminal record
- No Brady/Giglio material in background
- Successful completion of the following:
