Police Sergeant, Independence Police Department

Under direction, the Police Sergeant supervises and directs law enforcement and crime prevention activities of the department. This position provides leadership to officers, oversees shift operations, assists in investigations, and ensures departmental policies and procedures are followed.

Position Salary/Benefits:
$23.29 to $33.77 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Benefits include BCBS insurance, KP&F retirement, secondary retirement options with City Match IRA, a 3-Year Commitment for New Hires Bonus ($5,000), 9 hours of sick leave accrued monthly after three months (usable after six months), two weeks of vacation available immediately upon hire, and a $45,000 life insurance policy provided by the City.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of modern police administration principles and police science practices

  • Knowledge of criminal law, including apprehension, arrest, prosecution, and evidence preservation

  • Ability to analyze and interpret police problems and criminal evidence

  • Ability to effectively supervise and evaluate subordinate personnel

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective public and interdepartmental relations

  • Ability to make sound decisions in high-stress and emergency situations

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required (associate’s degree or college coursework preferred but not required)

  • Minimum of three years of law enforcement experience

  • Completion of Basic Recruit Training with the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center

  • Current Kansas driver’s license

  • Must be at least 21 years of age

  • Ability to maintain KLETC certification and complete assigned advanced training

  • Availability to work nights, weekends, shifts, and overtime

  • Physical ability to perform moderate to occasionally intense physical activity
