The City of Scranton is seeking a motivated, ethical, and community-oriented individual to serve as a full-time or part-time Police Officer. This position is responsible for protecting life and property, enforcing federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, preserving the peace, and providing professional law enforcement services to the community.
The Police Officer performs patrol duties, responds to calls for service, conducts investigations, enforces traffic laws, prepares reports, and works closely with residents to promote public safety and community trust.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Police Officer shall:
- Patrol assigned areas by vehicle or on foot to deter criminal activity and maintain public safety.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
- Enforce federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and department policies.
- Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal and traffic-related incidents.
- Identify, apprehend, arrest, and transport individuals suspected of violating the law.
- Enforce traffic laws and investigate motor vehicle accidents.
- Prepare accurate reports, citations, affidavits, and other required documentation.
- Collect, preserve, and document evidence in accordance with department procedures.
- Testify in municipal, district, and other courts as required.
- Provide assistance during emergencies, disasters, and public events.
- Operate department vehicles, communications equipment, and other law enforcement equipment safely and effectively.
- Foster positive relationships with community members, businesses, schools, and partner agencies.
- Perform code enforcement duties, as assigned.
- Assist with animal control responsibilities, as required.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in all aspects of the position.
- Participate in required training to maintain certifications and enhance professional skills.
- Perform other law enforcement duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) certification preferred, or the ability to obtain certification within the timeframe established by state law.
- Previous law enforcement experience preferred but not required.
- Valid Kansas driver's license, or the ability to obtain one.
- Ability to successfully complete a background investigation, drug screening, physical examination, and other pre-employment requirements.
- Ability to meet all requirements established by the State of Kansas for appointment as a law enforcement officer.

Compensation and Benefits
- Starting pay: $20.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
- Hiring range: $20.00–$25.00 per hour, depending on qualifications, certifications, and relevant law enforcement experience.
- Paid single health, dental, and vision insurance (100% employee-paid by the City for full-time employee).
