The El Dorado Police Department is accepting applications for a detective position.  

Details: Hourly Rate range $21.68 - $25.00 Hourly rate may vary depending upon education, experience, or qualifications. Compensation matrix will be applied for experience; degrees, certifications, military, etc

The El Dorado Police Department is a highly progressive and professional agency providing dedicated service to the citizens of El Dorado since 1917.  Our motto "Community Safety, Partners in Service" states the essential purpose of the El Dorado Police Department.  We protect the rights of all persons within our jurisdiction to be free from criminal attack, to be secure in their possessions and to live in peace.  We have an authorized force of 27 sworn officers and we want you to join our team.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs skilled investigative work involving alleged crimes against persons or property.
  • Reviews a variety of police related reports, conducts follow-up investigations and provides statistics related to crime trends.
  • Questions or interrogates complainants, witnesses and suspects; obtains written or recorded statements, depositions, or admissions.
  • Apprehends suspects and makes arrests.
  • Searches crime scenes and secures evidence to be reported for classification; maintains control of stored evidence, prepares, submits and follows-up on crime laboratory requests.
  • Reviews cases being prepared for trial with emphasis on the evidentiary and legal issues crucial to successful prosecution. Prepares detailed reports of activities and investigations made, consults with prosecutors, prepares case report for court action, and testifies in court.
  • Maintains contact with all police personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and provide general information about Department activities.
  • Maintains contact with general public, court officials, and other City officials in the performance of police activities, as assigned.
  • Maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedent.
  • Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances;
  • Prepares a variety of reports and records including reports of investigation, field interrogation report, alcohol influence reports, bad check form, vehicle impoundment form, traffic hazard report, etc.
  • Coordinates and supervises the training, assignment, development of subordinate police officers.
  • Coordinates activities with supervisors or other City departments, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the prosecuting, and Court Clerk regarding cases, policies and procedures

Evidence Custodian

  • Maintains control and responsibility of departmental evidence, using evidence management software and bar coding system.
  • Maintains an awareness of the special handling requirements of certain crime scene evidence, including preparing and packaging evidence for shipment to the crime lab for analysis, assuring for chain of custody procedures.
  • Advisory capacity to other members of the department to assure the proper collection and preservation of evidence.
  • Disposes of property after adjudication by releasing owner, destroying, or selling property according to established procedures.

Community Policing                                                                                       

  • Maintains control and responsibility of departmental evidence, using evidence management software and bar coding system.
  • Maintains an awareness of the special handling requirements of certain crime scene evidence, including preparing and packaging evidence for shipment to the crime lab for analysis, assuring for chain of custody procedures.
  • Advisory capacity to other members of the department to assure the proper collection and preservation of evidence.
  • Disposes of property after adjudication by releasing owner, destroying, or selling property according to established procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains communication by the frequent use of personal contact with the community.
  • Represents the department in continual interaction with various other social service agencies to combine all resources assuring for the best community service.
  • Works with various groups and individuals to address public safety concerns providing assistance in solving problems.
  • Maintains awareness of intelligence information and investigate statistical reports to identify and solve community problems.
  • Based on experience and length of service, demonstrates proficiency in all levels of patrol officer duties.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Valid Kansas Driver’s License
  • 21 years of age and US Citizen
  • No prior felony convictions
  • Minimum two years’ experience as a Patrol Officer.
  • Completed 20 hours on topics related directly to the Criminal Investigations Division.

Application Special Instructions/ Minimum Qualifications

Applicants who do not meet these minimum requirements will be automatically disqualified and are asked not to attend the scheduled testing date:

  • 21 years of age or older before hire date.
  • Citizen of the United States.
  • If military service has been rendered discharge must be honorable or equivalent.
  • If previous law enforcement certificate must not be revoked by the State of Kansas or any other state.
  • Has not been convicted, and does not have an expunged conviction for a crime which is a felony or felony level equivalent under the uniform code of military justice.
  • Has not been placed on diversion on or after July 1, 1995, by any state of the federal government for a crime which is a felony or its equivalent under the uniform code of military justice.
  • No convictions of DUI/DWI or other serious driving violation in the past 5 years.
  • No more than 1 DUI/DWI or other serious driving violation convictions (no time limit).
  • No more than 3 moving violations and at fault accidents withing the past 3 years.
  • Has a high school diploma or furnishes evidence of successful completion of an examination indicating an equivalent achievement.
  • Is free of any physical or mental conditions, which might adversely affect the applicant's performance as a patrol officer.
  • No convictions of morals, drugs or weapons charges which include, but are not limited to the following: Prostitution, Promoting prostitution, Indecent exposure, Sale of marijuana, narcotics, or non-narcotic drugs, Incest, Commercial gambling.
  • No marijuana use or possession within the past 2 years.
  • No illegal use or possession of narcotics, or non-narcotic drugs within the past 10 years.
  • No convictions of misdemeanor crimes of violence/use of physical force withing the past 3 years.
  • No more than 1 conviction for misdemeanor crimes of violence/use of physical force (no time limit).
  • Has not been convicted, does not have an expunged conviction, or has not been placed on diversion by any governmental entity for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or its equivalent under the uniform code of military justice. For the purposes of this section, a crime of domestic violence means a crime where an element of the crime is the user of or attempted use of physical force against another person who is a spouse, ex-spouse, a person with whom one shares a child in common, a person with whom one has cohabitated, ones parents, ones child, ones stepchild, ones foster child, or any child for whom one was the legal guardian.
  • A single conviction of any crime involving an element of deceit, untruthfulness, or dishonesty.
  • Any illegal distribution or sale of drugs whether or not charged, arrested, or convicted.
  • Any commission of felony crimes. Any information that could result in criminal charges will be forwarded to the proper jurisdiction.
  • No previously undisclosed crimes involving morals charges which include, but are not limited to the crimes outlined in 12 above.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of employment. Must obtain a valid Kansas Driver's License within 30 days of employment.
