    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

    ● Works normally during the daytime with changing work hours due to program planning, vacations and other staffing needs. Primary duties include planning and implementing community crime prevention programs, school programs and furthering a community oriented policing philosophy.  

    ● When assigned, performs police officer duties of security patrols, traffic control, investigation and first aid at accidents, detection, investigation and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct. 

    ● Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance.  

    ● Maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedent. 

    ● Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances. 

    ● Patrols City streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law,  control vehicular traffic, prevent or detect and investigate misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies and other law violations, and to otherwise serve and protect. 

    ● Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc. Takes appropriate law enforcement action.  

    ● Interrogates suspects, witnesses, and drivers. Preserves evidence. Arrests and issues notice to appear to violators. Investigates and renders assistance at the scene of vehicular accidents. Summons ambulances and other law enforcement vehicles. Takes measurements and draws diagrams of scenes.  

    ● Conducts follow-up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shifts. Seeks out and questions victims, witnesses, and suspects. Develops leads and tips. Searches the scene of crimes for clues. Analyzes and evaluates evidence and arrests offenders. Prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings.  

    ● Prepares a variety of reports and records including records pertaining to crime prevention programs, reports of investigation, field interrogation report, alcohol reports, influence reports, breathalyzer check list, vehicle impoundment form, traffic hazard report, etc.  

    ● Undertakes community oriented police work, and assists citizens with such matters as neighborhood, home and personal security, crime prevention, drug abuse resistance education (DARE), traffic safety, etc.  

    ● Participates in investigating criminal law violations occurring within the City limits, obtaining evidence and compiling information regarding these crimes, preparing cases for filing of charges, testifying in court, and related activities.  

    ● Coordinates activities with other officers or other City departments as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the City Attorney and the Administrator regarding cases, policies and procedures, as needed and assigned.  

    ● Maintains contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate community oriented policing activities, investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and provides general information about Department activities. 

    ● Other duties as assigned.  

    PERIPHERAL DUTIES  

    ● Maintains departmental equipment, supplies and facilities.  

    ● Maintains contact with general public, court officials, and other City officials in the performance of police operating activities. 

    ● Serves as a member of various employee committees.  

    ● Acts as a dispatcher in the absence of the dispatcher.  

    DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

    Education and Experience:  

    ● High school diploma or equivalent.  

    ● Minimum of two years law enforcement experience.  

    ● Experience in crime prevention program planning.

    TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

    JOB GOAL: To ensure a safe and secure learning environment. To work in partnership with

    the administration, faculty and students.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Patrols School grounds, and parking areas to prevent fire, theft, vandalism. and illegal entry.

    2. Maintain Law Enforcement certification by obtaining a minimum 40 hours of training through fiscal year July 1, - June 30. To include weapon[s] CPOST certification.

    3. Up hold Kansas Laws and Board Policy on and around district schools.

    4. Work with Director’s and building Principal’s on security, traffic and other issues.

    5. Assist other Law Enforcement Agencies and District Attorney’s Office.

    6. Security at district activities, if available and has a desire to work the events.

    7. Transport Monies to the bank.

    8. Perform Residential check to ensure student live in the district.

    9. Perform home visits to check on the status of a student for truancy issues or other Child in Need a care issues.

    10. Transport students to juvenile intake, Shawnee County Department of Corrections or possible treatment facilities, as needed.

    11. Assist staff with student issues.

    12. Be visible in hallways / school during passing periods, lunch periods and assemblies, or as needed, if available.

    13. Let building secretary know when you leave the building and when you return.

    14. Attend school staff meeting if the Administrations wants you to attend.

    15. Provide training to the district employees on law related topics or emergency procedures.

    16. Responsible for school cameras make sure operational and to obtain footage, as needed.

    17. Confront unwanted person[s] on the property or in the building.

    18. Prepare Kansas Standard Offense Reports or Miscellaneous reports to document incidents.

    19. Assist district Schools with lock down drills.

    20. Respond to district alarm if the director is not available.

    21. Responsible for assigning School keys.

    22. Respond to other schools as needed.

    23. If man power allows patrol district building and facilities.

    24. Attend hearing if requested.

    EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Director of Security with input from building Principals.

    The City of Ellsworth (pop 3000+) is now accepting applications for the position of Police Officer.  Ellsworth is conveniently located only 7 miles from I-70, and 35 minutes from Salina and Great Bend, along with only a 30 min drive to two Kansas reservoirs (Wilson and Kanopolis).

    This position will be responsible for conducting law enforcement duties to include but not limited to patrol, investigations, as well as other assigned duties.  The Ellsworth Police Department covers the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week utilizing 12-hour shifts.  Shift schedules are normally comprised of two days on, two days off, then three days on which reverse every week.  The Ellsworth Police Department is comprised of 7 F/T Officers (including Chief) and 1 Court Clerk.        

    Hours: Full Time

    Salary: Starting salary for a non-certified law enforcement officer (Police Officer 1A) is $17 per hour. Starting salary for a certified law enforcement officer is dependent on qualifications. 

    Police Officer IA $17-$20

    Police Officer 1B $18-$22+

    Police Officer II $18-$22+

    The Ellsworth Police Department participates in the KP&F retirement system.  The City of Ellsworth has 8 paid holidays in addition to giving 2 personal paid holidays each year.  The Department provides uniforms and equipment for each officer.

    Minimum requirements:
