    Under direction, the Police Sergeant supervises and directs law enforcement and crime prevention activities of the department. This position provides leadership to officers, oversees shift operations, assists in investigations, and ensures departmental policies and procedures are followed.

    Position Salary/Benefits:
    $23.29 to $33.77 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.     The City of Basehor is hiring for a Police Officer. Basehor is a growing city in the southeast corner  of Leavenworth County and is uniquely positioned with great accessibility to the Greater Kansas  City Metro Area. Basehor is the 2nd fastest growing city in Kansas with a population of 5,000 or  more. The population in Basehor is 6,896 residents and has increased in population by 48.9% in  the last 10 years. Basehor is also the 2nd safest city in Kansas. The Basehor Police Department  has 16 sworn officers, including the Police Chief.

    POSITION SUMMARY  

    Under the supervision of the Police Sergeant, the Police Officer protects and serves the citizens of  Basehor. This position provides citizen assistance, enforces all federal, state, and local laws, and  performs patrol duties. Making arrests, issuing traffic violations, and investigating crimes and  accidents are primary responsibilities of this position. This employee should possess good  communication, and public relation skills.  

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  

    • Enforces all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances 
    • Protects the life and property of citizens of Basehor; makes arrests, and issues traffic citations; performs routine patrol and traffic control duties, and prepares reports and files; investigates crime scenes, seizes, and preserves evidence; performs building checks 
    • Assists ambulance crew as necessary; provides citizen assistance; responds to emergency situations, and performs CPR and First Aid as needed 
    • Operates law enforcement equipment including patrol vehicles, firearms, and communications 
    • Interviews witnesses, suspects, and victims; serves warrants, subpoenas, and other legal documents, testifies in court 
    • Maintains (cleans) department equipment and vehicles 
    • Conducts safety programs for the public 
    • Performs animal control duties in the absence of the animal control officer • Provides security during various events 
    • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned 

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

    Experience: Full -time law enforcement experience is preferred. Employee is expected to have  acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of  employment. KLETC training is required to be obtained or previously certified officers will be  accepted. 

    Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent and certification from a recognized Kansas Law  Enforcement Training Center are required. An Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or related  degree is preferred. Continuing education as required annually and a valid Kansas Driver’s License  is required. 

    Technical Skills: A thorough knowledge of all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, CPR  and First Aid, law enforcement techniques, and mathematics is required. This employee must be  able to efficiently operate firearms, patrol vehicles, computers, two-way radios, radar equipment,  breath analysis equipment, and other law enforcement equipment. The ability to concentrate on tasks  in the presence of distractions, to complete and check forms and documents, to understand and  anticipate problems, and to read and interpret maps, manuals, legal documents, reports, and written  instructions is required. This employee should possess good public relation, oral and written  communication skills. 

    Problem Solving: Problem solving is a factor in this position. This employee encounters problems  with domestic violence, citizen complaints, traffic violations, and criminal investigations. 

    Decision Making: Decision making is a factor in this position. This employee makes decisions  about making arrests, investigating crimes and accidents, and performing daily duties in the safest  and most efficient manner. 

    Supervision: This employee works under the supervision of the Sergeant. This officer has no  supervisory duties.  

    Financial Accountability: This employee will make daily purchases related to operating a police  vehicle while performing duties, such as gasoline. This employee is responsible for safe operation of  departmental equipment, however does not participate in the annual budget process. 

    Personal Relations: Daily contact with the general public, co-workers, and supervisory personnel is  expected. Occasional contact with other city official, such as the Mayor, City Administrator and City  Council. 

    Working Conditions: Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to hazardous  chemicals, explosives, heights, excessive noise, and all types of weather conditions is expected.  This employee is exposed to an element of risk to personal safety. This employee is exposed to  bloodborne pathogens while investigating crime scenes, seizing and preserving evidence, and  assisting ambulance crews. This position will occasionally come in contact with angry citizens. 

    Physical Requirements: The ability to pass and maintain all physical requirements of the Kansas  Law Enforcement Training Center is recommended (KLETC).

    Compensation:  $27.13 - $37.98 /hr

    The Ottawa Police Department is seeking highly motivated applicants for the position of Police Officer who are committed to a long career with our department. The men and women of the Department are guided by the following values: To Protect and Serve with Duty, Honor, Integrity, Trust.

    With an authorized strength of 30 officers serving a growing population of nearly 13,000 there is room for advancement. Positions include Detective, Drug Detective, DARE Instructor, School Resource Officer (SRO), Master Police Officer, STAR Team (Special Tactics and Rescue), K9 Handler and Community Police Officer.  All specialty positions include a take-home vehicle. 

    The pay range for Master Police Officer is $29.03 to $40.64.  Officers are eligible to achieve the rank of Master Police Officer based on a combination of skill points and years of service in about 3 years.
    To accomplish our goals the latest technology and police practices are used. The Department operates a modern weapons range as part of a comprehensive training program. The range has a rifle range up to 150 yards and is equipped for night shooting, moving targets, 25-foot platform tower and steel range. Each officer qualifies with the standard issue Glock 17 Gen. 5 handgun, AR-15 rifle (in each car), 37MM Less-Lethal munitions, Taser, and Bola Wrap.  Handgun optics issued beginning in 2026.

    The department uses a combination of mobile LPR (in all patrol units), fixed Flock LPR cameras and several technology programs to help detect and identify criminal activity.  The department has a mix of all manufacturers for patrol vehicles, armored rescue vehicle, special response vehicle, UTV, uAUS, and fleet of police bicycles used for special events.

    The Department has a fitness room in the Law Enforcement Center equipped with free weights, functional fitness equipment, cardio machines, and mat area. Patrol schedule includes 12-hour shifts and two weekends off each month (4-day and 3-day).  Officers are issued all equipment, including boots. Beards, goatees, mustaches, and tattoos are allowed.

    Professional Development Program: Certified officers with road patrol experience will be awarded service credit for years completed service at the discretion of the Police Chief. The Professional Development Program allows officers to advance their careers through a combination of specified training and certifications plus tenure.  Officers can achieve the rank of Master Police Officer with about three years of experience and training.

    Lateral Transfer: Lateral transfers may be exempt from physical agility testing if the employing agency has a similar agility standard in place, discretion is up to the Police Chief.

    Minimum Qualifications:  Employees must be a Kansas resident upon hire, 21 years of age at time of appointment and a U.S. citizen, possess a valid Kansas driver’s license upon appointment, and be insurable by the city’s insurance carrier; high school diploma or GED is required, college credit preferred. Applicants must establish and maintain residency within Franklin County or within a driving distance of 35 miles of the Ottawa City Hall, AND within the state of Kansas within one year of hire. Applicants must successfully complete the following: written entrance exam, physical agility testing, and oral panel interview.     Job Description 

    Summary:

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    Criminal Investigations

    • Conduct skilled investigations into crimes against persons and property.

    • Review police reports, conduct follow-ups, and analyze crime-trend data.

    • Interview and interrogate complainants, witnesses, and suspects; obtain written or recorded statements.

    • Apprehend suspects and make lawful arrests.

    • Process crime scenes; secure, classify, and manage evidence; prepare and submit crime lab requests.

    • Review cases for prosecution, prepare detailed investigative reports, consult with prosecutors, and testify in court.

    • Maintain communication with police personnel and provide assistance during emergencies.

    Evidence Custodian Duties

    • Maintain control and accountability of departmental evidence using evidence management software and barcoding systems.

    • Ensure proper handling, packaging, and chain-of-custody for all evidence, including items requiring special procedures.

    • Advise staff on proper evidence collection and preservation.

    • Dispose of property according to established procedures once cases are adjudicated.

    Community Policing & Outreach

    • Maintain strong community engagement through regular personal contact.

    • Represent the department in interactions with social service agencies and community partners.

    • Work collaboratively with groups and individuals to address public safety concerns and problem-solve.

    • Review intelligence and statistical reports to identify and address community issues.

    • Demonstrate proficiency in all levels of patrol duties as required.

    Additional Responsibilities

    • Prepare various reports including investigative reports, field interrogations, DUI reports, impound forms, and more.

    • Coordinate and supervise the training and development of subordinate officers.

    • Collaborate with other city departments and law enforcement agencies.

    • Maintain availability by radio or telephone for emergencies.

    • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

    Education & Experience

    • Must be a certified law enforcement officer in the State of Kansas or have the ability to obtain Kansas certification through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC).
    • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Patrol Officer.
    • Completion of at least 20 hours of training related to Criminal Investigations.
    • History of completing cases and paperwork accurately and on time.
    • Must be in good standing with the El Dorado Police Department or current employing agency, defined as having no disciplinary actions within the past year, a satisfactory or higher performance evaluation, and no substantiated administrative investigations within the past year.
    • Must meet all requirements listed in the Patrol Officer job description.
      Requirements may be waived at the discretion of the City Manager, Police Chief, or designee.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Applicants who do not meet these minimum requirements will be automatically disqualified and are asked not to attend the scheduled testing date:

    1. 21 years of age or older before hire date.
    2. Citizen of the United States.
    3. If military service has been rendered discharge must be honorable or equivalent.
    4. If previous law enforcement certificate must not be revoked by the State of Kansas or any other state.
    5. Has not been convicted, and does not have an expunged conviction for a crime which is a felony or felony level equivalent under the uniform code of military justice.
    6. Has not been placed on diversion on or after July 1, 1995, by any state of the federal government for a crime which is a felony or its equivalent under the uniform code of military justice.
    7. No convictions of DUI/DWI or other serious driving violation in the past 5 years.
    8. No more than 1 DUI/DWI or other serious driving violation convictions (no time limit).
    9. No more than 3 moving violations and at fault accidents withing the past 3 years.
    10. Has a high school diploma or furnishes evidence of successful completion of an examination indicating an equivalent achievement.
    11. Is free of any physical or mental conditions, which might adversely affect the applicant's performance as a patrol officer.
    12. No convictions of morals, drugs or weapons charges which include, but are not limited to the following: Prostitution, Promoting prostitution, Indecent exposure, Sale of marijuana, narcotics, or non-narcotic drugs, Incest, Commercial gambling.
    13.  No marijuana use or possession within the past 2 years.
    14. No illegal use or possession of narcotics, or non-narcotic drugs within the past 10 years.
    15. No convictions of misdemeanor crimes of violence/use of physical force withing the past 3 years.
    16. No more than 1 conviction for misdemeanor crimes of violence/use of physical force (no time limit).
    17. Has not been convicted, does not have an expunged conviction, or has not been placed on diversion by any governmental entity for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or its equivalent under the uniform code of military justice. For the purposes of this section, a crime of domestic violence means a crime where an element of the crime is the user of or attempted use of physical force against another person who is a spouse, ex-spouse, a person with whom one shares a child in common, a person with whom one has cohabitated, ones parents, ones child, ones stepchild, ones foster child, or any child for whom one was the legal guardian.
    18. A single conviction of any crime involving an element of deceit, untruthfulness, or dishonesty.
    19. Any illegal distribution or sale of drugs whether or not charged, arrested, or convicted.
    20. Any commission of felony crimes. Any information that could result in criminal charges will be forwarded to the proper jurisdiction.
    21. No previously undisclosed crimes involving morals charges which include, but are not limited to the crimes outlined in 12 above.
    22. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of employment. Must obtain a valid Kansas Driver's License within 30 days of employment.

    Starting wages dependent on qualifications range from $59,500.00 to $63,400.00 annually.
