    The City of Topeka is seeking a dedicated and visionary Police Chief to lead its police  department into a future marked by innovation, community engagement, and  unwavering integrity. 

    Ideally situated along the Kansas River, Topeka is the capital of Kansas, covering 61.45  square miles, and is located along I-70, approximately 60 miles from Kansas City. The City  is home to nearly 125,500 residents and is part of a metro area comprising the counties  of Shawnee, Jackson, Jefferson, Wabaunsee, and Osage. Topeka is the fifth largest city in  Kansas, behind Wichita, Overland Park, Olathe, and Kansas City, and is the seat of  Shawnee County.     The City operates under a council-manager form of government and is governed by a  mayor — elected at large — and nine council members elected from districts, each serving  four-year terms with no term limits. 

    With a team of 373 public servants and an annual budget of nearly $50.4 million, the  Police Department maintains safety and prevents criminal activity throughout the City of  Topeka. In addition to the department’s Executive Bureau maintaining TPD’s overall integrity and security, major divisions include Criminal Investigation, Field Operations,  and Community Outreach. 

    Working under the supervision of the Deputy City Manager, the Chief of Police is  ultimately responsible for every facet of the operation of the Topeka Police Department. 

    Topeka’s new Chief of Police must first focus on building trust and relationships internally  and externally as they get to know the community and settle in. Then, they should be  ready to get to work assessing the department’s policies, programs, staffing, training, and  more. 

    This critical role demands a seasoned leader with a servant-leadership style, extensive  experience across various facets of law enforcement, including patrol, investigations,  administration, training, and community engagement, and a strong commitment to  transparent and effective communication. 

    This role requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s  degree in criminal justice, public or business administration, political science, or a related  field with advanced courses in police administration and/or a master’s degree preferred.  

    Candidates should also have at least 15 years of law enforcement experience, including 5 at the rank of captain or higher in a similar-sized or larger agency. The selected candidate must be certified as a State of Kansas Police Officer or be able to obtain the Kansas  Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training within six months and continue to  meet all training standards throughout their tenure. A valid Kansas driver’s license or the  ability to obtain one within 6 months is also required, and the new chief must meet the  City’s insurability standards.

    The City of Garden Plain is seeking applications for the position of police officer. We are a community of 1000 population, when fully staffed we have two officers and the chief.

    Applicants must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, and have no felony convictions, no Brady/Giglio/Garrity background  or disqualifying criminal history. Fully commissioned/KCPOST certified preferred but will consider non-certified depending on pre-employment testing scores.

    Starting pay commensurate to qualifications of applicant/prior service. Non-certified wage starts at $20.00 per hour with an increase after certification.  2024 pay plan is currently under study to commensurate with regional law enforcement salaries of experienced certified lateral transfers. This position is open until 12-31-24

    The Council Grove Police Department is accepting applications for a full time Police Officer that is proactive and possesses a good work ethic.

    The Police Department consists of a Chief, Lieutenant, Sergeant, four full time officers, including a K9 Team, and three part time officers.

    The city of Council Grove is the county seat of Morris County, Kansas, with a population of over 2,000 residents.     Under the direction of the Chief of Police, the Police Officer is responsible for maintain order, enforcing federal, state and local laws and ordinances, and protecting life and property within the city. The Police Officer patrols the City in patrol vehicles and on foot to prevent violence or infraction of applicable laws; issues traffic summons, investigates accidents, apprehends and arrests suspects. The Police Officer searches for, collects, identifies evidence at crime sense, examines/compiles information for cases, arrests violators of laws and ordinances, investigates and intervenes in domestic disputes, guards/transports prisoners, conducts interviews, answers citizen complaints and takes necessary corrective action, assists other law enforcement agencies, directs traffic as necessary and other duties as assigned.


    The employee is expected to have a high school diploma or equivalent, a current driver’s license with a good driving record; applicants must be 21 years of age.  KLETC certification and prior law enforcement experience preferred but not needed at time of application.

    The City of Halstead is accepting applications for the position of Deputy Chief.  Under the supervision of the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief is a non-exempt position under FLSA which protects and serves the citizens of Halstead.  This position provides citizen assistance, enforces all federal, state, and local laws, and performs patrol duties.  Making arrests, issuing traffic violations, and investigating crimes and accidents are the primary responsibilities of this position.  The Deputy Chief assumes the duties of the Chief of Police in his/her absence.  This employee should possess excellent supervisory, organizational, communication, and public relations skills. 

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Enforces all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; 

    • Supervision of the FTO program and new employees

    • Prepares monthly work schedule

    • Serves as the agency TAC

    • Serves as the agency evidence technician for all in-car and body camera systems

    • Assists in the development and implementation of new programs

    • Assists in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures

    • Protects the life and property of the citizens of Halstead;

    • Makes arrests, and issues traffic citations;

    • Performs routine patrol duties and prepares reports and files;

    • Investigates crimes and accidents, and gathers evidence;

    • Provides citizen assistance, and assists ambulance crews as needed;

    MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

    • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.


    DEPUTY CHIEF

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS

    Experience: Eight or more years of law enforcement experience is required.  Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months to one year of employment.

    Education: A high school diploma or GED is required.  This position requires graduation from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, 40 hours of continuing education annually, first aid/CPR certification, firearms certification, and a valid Kansas Driver’s License.

    Technical Skills: A thorough knowledge of all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, CPR and First Aid, law enforcement techniques, and mathematics is required. This employee must be able to efficiently operate firearms, patrol vehicles, computers, two-way radios, radar equipment, breath analysis equipment, and other law enforcement equipment.  The ability to concentrate on tasks in the presence of distractions, to complete and check forms and documents, to understand and anticipate problems, and to read and interpret maps, manuals, legal documents, reports, and written instructions is required.  This employee should possess excellent supervisory, public relations, oral, and written communication skills.

    Problem Solving: Independent problem-solving is involved in this position.  This employee encounters problems with domestic violence, citizen complaints, traffic violations, and criminal investigations.

    Decision Making: Independent decision-making is involved in this position.  This employee makes decisions about making arrests, investigating crimes and accidents, and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.

    Supervision: This employee works with limited supervision from the Chief of Police, exercises supervision over the field training officer program and new employee development, and exercises occasional supervision over subordinate personnel.

    Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for the safe operation of department equipment. This employee does have limited authority to purchase necessary department supplies.  This employee does not participate in the annual budget process.

    Personal Relations: Daily contact with the general public, subordinate personnel, co-workers, and supervisory personnel is expected.

    Working Conditions: Adverse working conditions exist within this position.  Exposure to hazardous chemicals, explosives, heights, asbestos, radiation, excessive noise, and adverse weather conditions may be encountered.  This position contains an element of risk to personal safety while performing the day-to-day duties.  This employee is exposed to bloodborne pathogens while investigating crime scenes, seizing and preserving evidence, and assisting ambulance crews.

    Physical Requirements: The ability to pass and maintain all physical activities and requirements of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center is required.  Must be 21 years of age.
